The first thoughts on hearing NSW Premier Mr O’Farrell’s intention to resign less than an hour ago when he announced his evidence at the current ICAC inquiry was in contradiction to the evidence provided to the prosecution overnight, demonstrates his moral integrity and the respect he has for the office he serves.
O’Farrell is believable when he claimed to have no recollection of writing the ‘thank-you note’ produced as contradictory evidence. The ‘note’ confirms the receipt of a ‘1959 bottle of Grange Hermitage wine’, valued at some $3000.
The gift was from Australian Water Holdings (AWH) executive Nick Di Girolamo, and he provided the thank-you note to ICAC prosecutors overnight after hearing Mr O’Farrell’s evidence given at yesterday’s ICAC inquiry. See link here – to read Mr O’Farrell’s full testimony.
More importantly – the testimony given by Mr Di Girolamo during the morning session – again linked here – revealed how Di Girolamo went about the business of earning political favours using lobbyist offering donations and gifts.
Di Girolamo’s evidence has opened a can of worms on the work of lobbyist’s and how the halls of Government are greased with gifts, donations, and other methods to obtain political favours. Di Girolamo obviously has an agenda after his testimony to the ICAC inquiry – that might be: “if I go down I’m gonna take as many as I can with me …”
It was Di Girolamo who provided the prosecution with the evidence that brought down O’Farrell. The NSW Opposition Leader – Mr Robertson – then did what any low-life politician would do – he tried to claim the moral high ground with the ALP Obeid and MacDonald scandals still front and center in everybody’s mind. The right thing to do would be to acknowledge O’Farrell’s integrity in the action he has taken – Robertson’s response cost his side of politics heaps … it was an ill-advised speech at such a sensitive stage of the ICAC inquiry. O’Farrell’s decision to stand down is the only action his character would allow. It can only be admired.
Compare that with Gillard’s performance given her complicity in the early 1990’s AWU scandal that cost her her Legal career. From that point on she had criminal baggage that was always going to follow her around. Yet – her integrity and character believed she could still have a career in politics that eventually took her to the Prime Ministership.
The gap in in how both these outcomes played out, gives us a measure of how integrity and character is measured in our political leaders.
This will not be the first big fish to fall as a result of the evidence revealed and findings made from this ICAC inquiry. O’Farrell’s fall was not expected and this now gives an indication in how far this inquiry will go in shaping the political landscape into the future.
